Due to its remoteness and overall lack of development, Jasper boasts impressive views of the stars, galaxies, and constellations, which are often tricky to see in more urban areas. It’s one of Parks Canada’s 13 Dark-Sky Preserves and if you get a clear night, this is a great tour to enjoy. What is a Dark Sky Preserve? Well it’s essentially a astronomy park, where local rules and bylaws ensure there is no light pollution from city lights.

Whether amateur stargazer or enthusiast, the planetarium’s trained guides will lead you on a virtual tour of the galaxy and explain a few of those mysteries of modern science, like the aurora borealis.

The Planetarium has one of the largest telescopes in North America, and on this tour, you’ll get to peer through its massive lenses and gaze into impossibly distant worlds.

The Telescope and Planetarium combo tour allows you to enjoy the planetarium and after gaze out to the sky using one of Alberta’s best and most powerful telescopes!

Good to Know

Jasper Planetarium
  • Jasper is one of the best places to spot the northern lights in Alberta, so it’s possible to see them during the winter months.
  • Book the later times for the darkest skies, especially in the summer when the sun doesn’t set until after 10 p.m.
  • This experience depends on the weather, so booking at the last minute may be beneficial. You can see the Astronomy forecast here.
  • This experience is up Old Lodge Road near the Jasper Park Lodge, making it ideal for those with a car or those staying onsite at the Fairmont. However you can enjoy their shuttle in the summer months (June – Aug), but please call the Fairmont at (780) 852-3301 to confirm if the shuttle is running when you wish to attend.
  • If you visit during the winter, it’s essential to dress warm, as you will be standing outside for up to one hour.
  •  Latecomers are not admitted to the planetarium dome experience
  • Their cancellation policy is 24 hours.
