Quick Overview

Destination:
  • Banff
Type:
  • Hiking
Adrenaline Level:
  • 😊
Season:
  • Winter
Length:
  • Half Day

We generally prefer to avoid Johnston Canyon in the summer months as it’s one of the most crowded experiences in Banff. However, in the winter, Johnston Canyon is one of the best winter hikes in Banff and an entirely different experience compared to summer.

Between November and May, you’ll be met with low crowds and surreal beauty on the Johnston Canyon trail, especially on weekdays.

See frozen waterfalls cascading down the mountains and the amazing Johnston Canyon. The tour picks you up in Banff and supplies a knowledgeable guide with equipment such as microspikes (a must at Johnston Canyon in the winter), poles, and snacks.

There are multiple tours available in the day and in the evening. Remember to dress warm! We recommend hats, gloves, boots, and a jacket.

We're Cameron and Natasha

We've been writing about travel for the last decade. In 2018, we settled in the Canadian Rockies, one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Now, we live in Canmore and spend as much time as possible exploring and hiking around Banff. It’s one of the most spectacular areas and the perfect place for an outdoor vacation.

We aim to help you get the most out of your trip to Banff National Park and the surrounding areas. Learn more about us or support our work.
